Dr. MA has been practicing in trademark, copyright, anti-unfair competition and other IP laws for nearly two decades. He is skilled in consulting on trademark prosecution strategy as well as protection and enforcement of trademark rights. He is highly experienced in intellectual property litigation and non-litigation matters, especially in connection with brand protection, recognition and protection of well-known trademarks, overseas trademark protection strategy, IP enforcement, and other fields as well.  

Dr. MA has been named as “IP STAR” by Managing Intellectual Property (MIP), “Highly Recommended IP Litigation Lawyer” by CHAMBERS Asia-Pacific, “WTR1000 Recommended Litigation Lawyer in China”, “WTR Global Leader” by World Trademark Review (WTR), and as “Leading Litigation Lawyer” by Asian Law Directory. The lawsuits handled by him have been ranked by the Supreme People’s Court, Beijing and Shanghai Higher People's Courts as “Annual Top 10 Cases” and as a “Classic Case” and awarded by the Quality Brands Protection Committee (QBPC) as the Yearly Ten Best Practices on many occasions.  

Dr. MA has often been invited to give speeches and presentations on Chinese IP law and practice by IP organizations including New York Intellectual Property Lawyers Association (NYIPA), Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO), INTA and AIPPI, USPTO. He has published many articles in professional law reviews and periodicals including Intellectual Property, Chinese Trademark, Managing Intellectual Property as well as in other media outlets. He is one of the main authors of the China Intellectual Property Protection Manual as published by CCH, and is also the main translator of Trademark Law: A Practical Anatomy (2014 China Renmin University Press). 

Dr. MA Qiang joined Haiwen & Partners in September  2020 and currently practices at the Beijing Office.

Dr. MA became qualified to practice law in China in 1999 and is a member of the Chinese Bar Association. 

Dr. MA is Deputy Director of Trademark Law Committee of Beijing Bar Association.  He is also a member of the Trademark Law Harmonization Committee  of the International Trademark Association (INTA), as well as a member of the Trademark Law Committee of the Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) China. Previously, Dr. MA chaired the Asia-Pacific Subcommittee of the Parallel Imports Committee of INTA. 

Dr. Ma is Part-time LLM Supervisor of Law Schools of Shanghai Jiaotong University, University of International Business and Economics, and Beijing Institute of Technology, and Specially-invited Expert Teacher of Law School of Shenzhen University. 

Dr. MA graduated from Renmin University of China and obtained an LL.B in Intellectual Property in 1999. Prior to that Dr. MA studied at Hohai University and obtained a B.A. Later, he obtained an LL.M. Degree in Civil and Commercial Law from Peking University and a SJD in International IP Law from Renmin University of China. Dr. MA Qiang also graduated from George Washington University with an LL.M. Degree in IP Law.
