Edward Liu, Partner at Haiwen & Partners LLP, together with Lori Ng and Mickey Li (Senior Associates), Aaron Lai, Chantelle Chan and Donald Lui (Associates), and Thomas Au and Winnie Lui (Trainee Solicitors) from the firm’s Dispute Resolution team, have co-authored the article titled “2025 First Half-Year Hong Kong Arbitration Round-Up”, published in the October 2025 issue of Arbitration Law Monthly. The publication is edited by Prof. Rob Merkin KC and forms part of Informa’s leading series on international arbitration.

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of landmark arbitration-related decisions issued by the Hong Kong courts in the first half of 2025, covering a wide range of issues including compatibility and enforcement of arbitration agreements, challenges to arbitral awards, interim measures in support of arbitration, non-signatory enforcement, and enforcement of online arbitration awards.

This article continues Arbitration Law Monthly’s long-standing editorial focus on global developments in arbitration. Edward Liu has been a regular contributor to this publication for over 15 years, offering independent, trusted insights on Hong Kong and regional arbitration law.

Notably, this marks the third consecutive year that Haiwen’s Dispute Resolution team has been invited to author the Hong Kong half-year arbitration case law round-up, underscoring the firm’s continued thought leadership in international arbitration.

Edward Liu commented: “We are honoured to once again contribute to Arbitration Law Monthly. The decisions handed down by the Hong Kong courts in the first half of 2025 demonstrate unwavering judicial support for arbitration and provide valuable guidance for parties and counsel navigating complex cross-border disputes.”

Hong Kong’s Continued Rise as a Global Arbitration Hub

The article also cites findings from the 2025 International Arbitration Survey conducted by White & Case and the School of International Arbitration at Queen Mary University of London, which rank Hong Kong as the joint second most preferred seat of arbitration globally, alongside Singapore. The survey further reports that HKIAC Rules are the most preferred in the Asia-Pacific region and second globally, just behind the ICC Rules — reinforcing Hong Kong’s continued emergence as a global hub for arbitration.

In addition, the article highlights a growing expectation among arbitration users for greater procedural efficiency, including early determination mechanisms and increased use of technology such as AI, while maintaining confidentiality. With its modern arbitral framework, arbitration-friendly judiciary, and strong emphasis on party autonomy, Hong Kong is well-positioned to meet these evolving demands. As regional cooperation deepens and institutional developments continue, Hong Kong is poised to play an even more influential role in the global arbitration landscape.
