Haiwen Secures Complete Victory in Over HK$1 Billion Dispute in Hong Kong

Haiwen & Partners LLP has achieved a major victory for the plaintiff, a wholly owned subsidiary of a state-owned financial institution, in a high-profile case before the High Court of Hong Kong, obtaining judgment for a total of more than HK$730 million plus interest and costs against businessman Mr. Huang Youlong, the husband of Chinese actress Vicki Zhao Wei.

该判决为一宗自2024年12月立案以来备受本地及国际媒体关注的案件画上句号。案件涉及黄有龙先生就其控股公司发行的票据所提供的个人担保。票据发行方违约后，客户指示海问在香港提起诉讼，追讨相关本金及应计利息。基于案件所涉合同安排及事实基础充分明确，且相关法律责任具有坚实依据，海问代表客户向法院申请简易判决。对此，黄先生作出强烈抗辩，试图建立可供审理的争议点以抗拒该申请。

The decision concludes a widely followed lawsuit that attracted significant local and international media attention since it was filed in December 2024. The action concerned a personal guarantee provided by Mr. Huang Youlong in connection with notes issued by a company under his ownership. Following the issuer’s default, the firm’s clients instructed Haiwen to initiate proceedings in Hong Kong to recover the outstanding principal and accrued interest,Having regard to the solid contractual framework, well‑established factual record, and the clear legal basis for the claim, Haiwen applied for summary judgment on behalf of its client. Mr. Huang, however, mounted a vigorous defence and sought to establish triable issues in an effort to resist the application.

Through meticulous legal analysis and a carefully calibrated litigation strategy, Haiwen successfully persuaded the Court that Mr. Huang’s defence disclosed no arguable basis in law or fact. The Court granted summary judgment in favour of the client, enabling a swift and cost‑effective resolution without the need for a full trial. Eventually on 9 December 2025, the High Court of Hong Kong ruled fully in favour of the firm’s client, ordering payment of a total sum exceeding HK$1 billion together with continuing interest at the judgment rate and legal costs payable forthwith.
